Born in the late 1950s, I grew up among the media gatekeepers without even knowing that there were gatekeepers. We listened to radio stations, watched TV shows, read newspapers and magazines, consumed a steady diet of slick advertising… and we did it all happily and mindlessly. Television was new enough; we were thrilled to be along for the ride. And then came the Internet. And the realization of how cleverly we had been corralled, fed, and kept blissfully ignorant.
